  • FTL or Full Truckload

Companies that ship large quantities of goods often prefer Full Truck Load (FTL) transportation. In FTL, the items typically occupy the entire cargo space or a significant portion of it. This method enhances the efficiency of the transportation process since goods are transported directly from the supplier to the customer. Moreover, FTL accelerates the transportation of goods, eliminating the need to make multiple deliveries to various customers. It also reduces the risk of goods being damaged due to frequent reloading.

The swiftness and ample cargo space provided by FTL make it an ideal choice for transporting bulk quantities of perishable goods. FTL is also a practical option for businesses looking to move heavy objects from one location to another. However, it may not be a cost-effective solution for small and medium-sized enterprises, as the expenses often outweigh the benefits.

  • LTL or Less Than Truck Load

Less Than Truckload (LTL) pertains to the conveyance of goods or items that do not necessitate a full truckload. Consequently, a single truck can accommodate multiple shipments from various customers, and each shipper incurs charges based on the space they occupy. The service cost may also fluctuate depending on the nature of the cargo and the utilization of supplementary services.

LTL is particularly well-suited for small and medium-sized businesses, which typically dispatch smaller quantities of goods compared to larger corporations. LTL allows these businesses to efficiently and economically transport goods on a regular basis. The primary drawback of LTL, however, is the limited control over delivery routes and schedules.

  • Expedited Trucking Service

Expedited trucking services are centered on the swift movement of goods from one location (point A) to another (point B), regardless of the destination or the time of transportation. This approach proves invaluable when dealing with items that are too weighty or delicate for air transport and must be delivered promptly. Furthermore, expedited trucking services guarantee punctual delivery of the item, mitigating the typical risks inherent in the supply chain.

  • Intermodal Freight Shipping

Intermodal freight shipping involves the movement of goods through a combination of various transportation modes, such as rail and trucking services. Each mode complements the others, addressing the inherent limitations of individual services. The process typically commences with a shipping container arriving at the port, followed by the container's transfer to rail. Ultimately, the container reaches its ultimate destination via truck.

  • White-Glove Services

White-glove services are use for the transportation of items demanding exceptional attention due to their value, delicacy, or dimensions. In contrast to standard transportation services, white-glove services involve arriving at a designated site, packing, and setting up the item. The personnel employed by these companies are extensively trained and possess the necessary skills to utilize specialized equipment when dealing with such articles. Similar to certain specialized trucking services, white-glove services are often associated with higher costs.

The Difference Between Dry Van Freight and Flatbeds

In the shipping industry, you'll typically encounter two primary types of commercial trailers: dry vans and flatbeds.

What is a Dry Van Freight Trailer?

Dry van freight is typically transported in a fully enclosed trailer designed for rear loading and unloading. This versatile trailer has various applications, with its primary role being the transportation of commercial goods. Dry van trailers are typically positioned at loading docks that are level with the trailer's floor.

In many cases, a van truck is equipped with a forklift or pallet jack, simplifying and expediting the loading and unloading procedures. Forklifts can also be employed to offload cargo from dry van trailers even in the absence of a loading dock, as their forks can be raised to the level of the trailer's deck.

Dimensions and Specs of Dry Van Trailer

One significant distinction between dry van trailers and flatbeds lies in their dimensions. In standard measurements, a dry van's cargo unit typically spans around 53 feet in length, with a width of approximately 102" and an external height of about 13'6".

Typically, there exist various categories of dry vans available for selection. Your choice of a specific dry van can depend on factors such as the nature of your cargo, the distance to the destination, and prevailing shipping rates.

What is a Flatbed Freight Trailer?

For exceptional versatility in transportation, consider selecting a flatbed trailer. What makes this trailer particularly convenient is its wide range of options. It can be employed for the loading and unloading of large cargo and is capable of transporting oversized materials or machinery that cannot be accommodated by standard trailers.

The flatbed trailer's open sides and rear grant unobstructed access for both loading and unloading your cargo. This key distinction separates it from dry vans and ensures a smooth process without any hindrances.

In addition to loading and unloading palletized loads and equipment, a forklift is employed for moving various objects. Given the absence of sides on a flatbed trailer, it is also possible to utilize a crane for transferring items from the trailer.

There are a various forms of flatbed trailers that are used including step-decks, double-drops, etc.

Another significant type of flatbed trailer, known as a Roll-tite or Conestoga trailer, enjoys popularity.

Roll-tite/Conestoga Trailers:

These trailers are distinctive in that they blend the versatility of flatbed trailers with the coverage and protection typically found in dry van trailers.

This trailer design features retractable curtains constructed from robust tarp material attached to a metal frame. Drivers can fully retract these curtains during loading and unloading, and then deploy them to secure their cargo while in transit.

Benefits:

  • While a flatbed trailer relies on a tarp system to shield the cargo from external factors like wind and water, a Roll-tite/Conestoga trailer offers significantly enhanced protection.

  • Time-saving benefit: Eliminating the need for manual tarping allows for quicker loading and unloading of cargo.

  • Minimizes physical labour: Rolling a tarp over cargo is less physically demanding and challenging compared to manually tarping the goods.
